Industry Report: The Used Heavy Machinery & Truck Market in the first half of 2019

Mascus.com is a global listing web site currently featuring more than 450,000 used heavy machinery and industrial vehicles for sale from more than 6,000 professional sellers (traders, dealers and OEMs). Additionally, Mascus builds custom digital solutions such as stock management solutions, webshops, inspection tools and mobile apps, and marketing tools for OEMs and heavy machinery dealers.
This report showcases valuable data from the used heavy equipment market during the first half of 2019, by analysing the volume of items listed on Mascus and the buyers’ demand during this period. Our conclusions are based on an average of more than 400,000 monthly used heavy machinery items listed for sale on Mascus and the global buyer interest they raised in terms of most requested machine types, most requested brands and countries exhibiting the highest demand for used equipment.
More than 6,000 companies are choosing Mascus to list their used equipment stock and reach a global audience consisting of over 3,350,000 visits from buyers every month.
Volume of used equipment listings on Mascus in H1 2019
In the first half of 2019, there were over 400,000 active listings for sale per month on Mascus, with an average of over 80,000 new listings added on the platform each month and over 100,000 removed listings each month. Since our listing service does not register final transactions between buyers and sellers, we consider a machine SOLD when it is removed from Mascus by its seller.
Interesting fact: In total, there were 498,616 new listings and 641,958 removed listings on Mascus during the first half of 2019.
Listings of used construction equipment accounted for 50% of total active listings on Mascus, with 200,000 used equipment for sale on average per month during this period. At the same time, listings of agricultural machines and transportation vehicles each cover 20% of the total number of active listings, about 80,000 machines for each of these sectors.

Interesting fact: In terms of removed listings, the volume of removed Tractors from Mascus was twice larger than removed Crawler excavators.
Crawler excavators, Tractors and Wheel loaders were on top 3 positions for newly added listings for sale on Mascus; new listings of Crawler excavators, as well as Wheel loaders peaked in April.
In East Europe, March was a good month for Backhoe Loaders (1,800 sold), while May brought the highest interest for Crawler excavators (1,800 sold), and Wheel loaders (1,500 sold).

Tractor Units are the most auctioned listings on Mascus among all machine types from all sectors. Looking at regional trends, we noticed the removed listings of Panel vans peaked in May in Western Europe (over 5,500 listings removed), while in Americas region, there were two spikes in February and June for School buses.

In the Nordic and Baltic region, Tractors represented the majority of removed listings (between 7,500 and 10,500 removed listings per month), the rest of machine types in top 10 most sold items were below 1,000 per month.

Demand for used equipment listings on Mascus in H1 2019
Our listing service does not register final transactions between buyers and sellers, so for reporting purposes we consider a machine SOLD when it is removed as listing from Mascus by its seller.
In the first half of 2019, the following countries brought the highest buying demand to Mascus by sending out most buying contact requests (emails) and registering most calls to sellers: Germany, Netherlands, Poland, United Kingdom and Sweden. In terms of most requested brands overall, 13% of all buyer inquiries were for Caterpillar machines, 10% for Volvo machines and 7% for John Deere machines.
Most demanded brands on Mascus via email requests and mobile calls
Crawler excavators were the most requested used construction equipment, and second most demanded machines overall, after Tractors. Other construction used equipment of high interest were Wheel loaders, Mini excavators < 7t (Mini diggers), Wheeled excavators and Backhoe loaders.
In the Transportation sector, most requested machine types were Tractor Units, followed by Tipper Trucks, Crane trucks, Engines (from the truck Parts offer), and Cars.
Top 5 most demanded used agricultural machines in Q1-Q2 in 2019 on Mascus were Tractors, Combine harvesters, Round balers, Square balers and Drills.
Interesting fact: Tractors account for a very high demand in comparison with other agricultural machines.
Material handling machine types with highest demand in the first half of the year were Diesel forklift trucks, Electric forklift trucks and LPG forklift trucks.
Among machines in the Forestry sector, Forwarders, Harvesters and Wood chippers brought most email contact requests and call clicks, while Riding mowers, Sweepers and Compact tractors received most buyer interest in the Groundscare sector.
We have also looked into geographical demand to see which countries showed the highest interest in buying used heavy equipment for use in construction, transportation, agricultural, material handling and forestry sectors in the first half of 2019 .
